Working part time while studying

If you are a student and seeking part-time or temp employment to make some pocket money, you must be at least 13 before you can be employed. If you are between age 13 to 15, then you can only engage in suitable light work. There is no strict definition of light work provided but general admin and working in fast food restaurants/cinema as cashiers should be considered light work. Industrial work such as warehouse or construction are strictly out. Most employers would only consider employing students who are at least 16 as legally the employers would not need to consider whether the work nature is suitable for children/young person and how many hours they are allowed to work.      For foreign students, employers are allowed to employ students who are full time matriculated or registered students in one of the following institutions if he/she is

-14 years or above; and on vacation

Note: Foreign students from the above-listed schools/institutions who are waiting for their final examinations results or convocation are also granted work pass exemption if the period of waiting falls within the vacation period as stipulated by their academic calendar. However, once they have completed their studies, and their student pass expires, they will no longer be exempted from work pass requirements.

Employers who wish to hire foreigners who have completed their studies with their respective schools/institutions, should apply for appropriate work passes on their behalf. Each application will be accessed on its merits, subject to the prevailing work pass criteria and approval by the Controller of Work Passes.

Student Pass holders studying in institutions other than those listed above are not allowed to work during vacation while holding Student Passes in Singapore.
